Headed for the slopes? The best days are ahead

Unique and beautiful destinations await

This has been an unusual winter in terms of snowfall, with parts of the southern U.S. having experienced unprecedented snowstorms, while snow levels are well below average across large swaths of the Midwest. Every state has recorded measurable snow for the first time since 2018 and this is a La Niña winter, so meteorologists predict cooler, wetter conditions across the Northwest through April. After weeks of sun, the clouds recently rolled in and the Pacific Northwest’s mountains are covered in fresh powder — just look at Central Oregon’s South Sister, which was the snowiest place in the western U.S. by the end of January.

Booking a stay at a mountain resort is one of the best ways to enjoy winter, especially for those who need a break from gloomy, wet valley weather. Get a taste of the “American Alps” in Leavenworth, a Bavarian-style village nestled in the foothills of the Washington Cascades. The area really does have something for everyone. You can shop, eat, and even take the kids sledding in the town’s lively, postcard-worthy downtown, then head out to meet reindeer at a nearby farm. When the slopes are calling, head to Stevens Pass, a popular ski resort that features a wide array of trails and even night skiing with up to five lifts running under the lights. Book a room at the nearby Icicle Village Resort for easy access to all of Leavenworth’s wonderful activities, but heads-up — it might be hard to leave the resort’s spa and lodge-style restaurant. Or if you’re seeking a moment of peace, check out the Post Hotel, a unique wellness retreat in downtown Leavenworth. The hotel features ski and snowboard rentals so you can carve through the slopes one day, then enjoy the wellness center the next.

If outdoor recreation is your top winter priority, visit Sunriver, Oregon, home to miles of gentle walking trails, an ice skating rink, and cross-country skiing. From Sunriver Resort, visitors can take a shuttle to Mt. Bachelor, Oregon’s largest ski resort with slopes for all experience levels. While you’re there, be sure to stop into Anthony’s at the Old Mill in Bend, which sits right on the Deschutes River and features a great three-course sunset dinner.

For more downhill fun, snowshoeing, and ice skating, visit McCall, Idaho, aka “Ski Town USA.” Make your vacation extra special by staying at Hotel McCall, a boutique hotel dating back to 1904 on the banks of Payette Lake. You’ll thank yourself while luxuriating in the on-site spa after a long day on the slopes.

Roughly 200 miles southeast, you’ll find the resort town of Sun Valley, known for nearby Bald and Dollar mountains. Hotel Ketchum is an ideal jumping-off point with an indoor lounge, outdoor murals and firepits, and complimentary snowshoes to get your adventure started, while Tamarack Lodge offers shuttles to the ski slopes, as well as easy access to art galleries, shopping, and fine dining. Knob Hill Inn, with its bubbling outdoor hot tubs and beautiful views, is also a great spot to return to after a long day on the slopes.

All of these locations offer beautiful scenery, but if you want a true feast for the eyes, then set your sights on Montana and Yellowstone National Park. While many choose to visit the park in the summer, this wild, rugged outdoor playground is a must-see during the winter. For the ultimate Yellowstone experience that won’t sacrifice the finer things, treat yourself to a luxurious stay complete with guided adventures (think axe throwing, cross-country skiing, yoga, fly fishing, and stargazing) at Sage Lodge, located along the Yellowstone River and just 35 minutes from the park.

After a winter getaway to one of these places, you might find yourself eagerly awaiting the end of next summer.
