Sip and stay awhile at these Oregon wine getaways

Cheers to these accommodations among the vineyards.

Decades ago, Oregon’s position in the world of wine could be described as off-the-beaten-path, with potential but none of the renown of places like Napa, Tuscany, or Bordeaux.

Today, wine lovers travel from far-flung locales just to get a taste of what’s growing across the state — and how lucky are we that these sought-after destinations are right in our own backyard? When you’re planning your next extended visit to the vineyards, these accommodations are the perfect place to put your feet up and raise a glass.

If you’re looking for luxury in the Willamette Valley, you’ll find it here. This sprawling resort sits on 35 acres at the edge of Newberg, just minutes away from more vineyards than you can count (Rex Hill, Ponzi, Bells Up, and Sealionne are some of the closest). On-site, there are 77 deluxe guest rooms and eight suites, a lavish wellness and health experience, walking trails, plus multi-course fine dining at JORY Restaurant.

By booking one of these unique guest accommodations, you’re steps from the brand’s newest tasting room, where pinot noir and chardonnay from the Yamhill-Carlton AVA, as well as some bottles from California, are on the tasting menu. There’s also a Midweek Escape promotion that offers a 15% discount for guests who stay Sunday through Thursday.

Nestled in the heart of McMinnville, this Michelin Key-awarded spot blends trendy with vintage vibes, where each of the 36 rooms is appointed with different art by local artists and craftspeople. The knowledgeable concierge staff can help you navigate, or simply know where to start, when it comes to dining and the 200+ wineries in the area (several are within walking distance).

Start your stay at the eastern end of the Columbia River Gorge by booking the Evoke Winery Suite; feel the stress melt away as you listen to records and settle in, before heading down the street to the partner tasting room where you gain membership benefits for the day. If your sights are set outside of town, feast on a Nordic brunch at Broder Øst then spend the day touring the area’s wineries and u-pick farms on the famed Fruit Loop.

Valley River Inn offers guests a relaxing and picturesque stay as the only riverfront hotel in Eugene, Oregon. Guests can choose from over 250 fully renovated rooms and suites, all curated with a Pacific Northwest aesthetic that pays homage to the hotel's original design and includes the luxuries of a modern upscale hotel. Guest can enjoy dining at Sweet Waters on the River or sip a glass of Willamette Valley wine while sitting outside on their private balcony, taking in the sunset on the river. The hotel is a short distance from downtown Eugene, local wineries, and outdoor adventures.

Headed to the Oregon Shakespeare Festival? Ashland Springs Hotel is a great jumping off point. Photo courtesy of Ashland Springs Hotel

Write your own epic tale in this town known for theatrical performances of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival and mineral springs. This 1925-built landmark, renovated and featured in Architectural Digest, has a special Wine Country Escape package. Guests receive two tastings from partner wineries and receive a $50 voucher for dinner at the equally historic Larks Home Kitchen Cuisine.

Leaving the Rogue Valley for its more rustic neighbor, the Applegate Valley, this log cabin perched above the river is a great basecamp to explore at a slower pace. Visit Valley View Winery, which honors the legacy of polymath Peter Britt, who cultivated Oregon’s first wine grapes in the 1800s in nearby Jacksonville. Red Lily and Schmidt Family Vineyards are other standouts.
